How to Use a Paint Sprayer to Paint Furniture
Hey friends! I hope your new year is starting off well! I am excited for new opportunities, projects and so much more. This year I am starting off my posts with a bang and sharing one of my most favorite painting techniques and talk about how to paint furniture with a paint sprayer.
*A big thanks to Wagner Spray Tech for sponsoring this post! Without my sponsors I could not keep my website running! I only endorse and endorse companies I truly believe in and I truly love Wagner products.*
My goal this year is to work on cleaning up some things around the house that I have been putting off. I have had this old coffee table that I have been planning to give a new paint job to use in the living room. It has those round dowels under the table holding the base and the top together and painting those have been something I didn’t want to attempt. But then I realized something….I could use my paint sprayer and cut the painting time in half and save me from hours of painting the small details.
How to use a paint sprayer to paint furniture:
I decided to use my Wagner Flexio 4000 paint sprayer to paint this coffee table. This is a great all around paint sprayer and it includes a detail sprayer which is perfect for cabinets, furniture and bookshelves.
I also was super excited to use my spray tent! This thing is a life saver. It’s so cold here at my house right now, that any outdoor project is out of the question, and I do not like to spray furniture in my garage out in the open. This spray tent fixes that problem. I can even use it in the house…if I had a space to put it! It is so nice to keep all the overspray inside the tent.
The Wagner Flexio 4000 is one of my favorite sprayers, I have used it all over my house, including my stairs. I love the smooth spray pattern and the flexibility of the long hose. The sprayer is lighter because the motor is housed in the base on the ground, instead of on the handle like some.
This is the detail nozzle. It also comes with a regular nozzle so you can do large projects as well.
Obviously mine have been well loved and it shows!
Here is my Wagner spray tent. This is the medium size and it fits my coffee table nicely. Its dimensions are roughly 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 wide and 5 1/2 feet tall. I find it a very versatile size for many pieces of furniture I paint.
Now, let’s talk a bit on how to paint furniture with a paint sprayer.
Most important, make sure you have all your safety equipment. I use glasses and a mask to protect my face, I also make sure to pull my hair back and keep it clean. If you are doing a big project, such as the exterior of a house, you can use coveralls or other clothing to protect anything you do not want paint on.
The first thing you want to focus on is surface prep. Make sure your surface is clean of debris and oil. You can also scuff up the surface with sand paper to allow your surface to accept the paint better.
You can also put a primer coat on prior depending on the surface you are using.
Next, Pick the appropriate paint for the project. I used some leftover Benjamin Moore paint from the exterior of my home. It was the perfect color, and I decided it would work well because if it is strong enough to be used outdoors it would be great on a coffee table.
Once my coffee table was clean and my paint was prepped, I got my paint sprayer ready. I like to prep my sprayers by running water through the sprayer first, just to make sure everything is working right. If you miss this step, you may waste paint if somehow the nozzle is clogged, etc.
Now it is time to paint the furniture!
I like to start by spraying an even thin coat of paint, and once that dries apply another. It doesn’t take long to let paint dry when using a sprayer. It dries really fast.
Since this coffee table had dowel decor, I made sure to paint them from multiple different angles to get good coverage of them all.
This took my about 10 minutes to paint! I let it sit overnight to cure and I could decide to add a sealer at this point, but I chose not to because I love the finish of this Benjamin Moore paint gives.
And here is the gorgeous coffee table all done!
A little closer!
These dowels were so much easier to paint with the paint sprayer!
The black paint was something I wanted to try, to give a bit of contrast in the space.
Theres oodles of character in this old coffee table. It was something I was given and was hand made by a local.
I am really happy with how it turned out!
Have you tried painting using a paint sprayer? If you have any goals this year to try new things, this may be something you want to look into! These paint sprayers are affordable and so versatile. I know many of us have picked up new hobbies this past year and why not try to keep up the positivity!
