Fake Gingerbread House Ornaments with Homemade Puff Paint

Gingerbread houses are a classic Christmas icon. Whether you like to make them or eat them there is something to involve anyone. I wanted to make something that would be a bit more longer lasting, so I decided to make some easy gingerbread house ornaments and I decorated them with some homemade puff paint. They were supe easy to make and I want to share how to make them and some tips on making them without a Cricut machine.

First lets talk about how to make the homemade puffed paint! Its super easy to make and its such a great option when you dont have store bought.

Here are some tools that you can use to make these adorable gingerbread house ornaments:

I used my Cricut Maker to cut the gingerbread house shapes out of Chipboard. You could easily cut these shapes yourself using cardstock or cut them out of wood as well. The great thing about the chipboard is that it has a natural look of gingerbread.

I easily wnet on Cricut Design Space and found some simple houses to cut out, I made them about 3 inches in size.

Using chipboard you have to use a deep knife to cut them, but it makes it so easy to create whatever design you want.

Once you have your designs cut out, you can go to work decorating them. I chose to make this homemade puff paint and keep it white. With the homemade puff paint you can add coloring to change them, but I chose to keep it white, just like a gingerbread house would have.

I put my homemade puff paint in a squeeze jar and then started decorating away. It was really easy to work with this puff paint. You need to let it sit out overnight to dry all the way once you are done decorating. As it is in the name, the paint puffs up as it dries giving it a 3D effect.

This craft project is a great one to involve kids in as well. The puff paint is safe to use and can be easily cleaned up with soap and water.

Look how adorable these gingerbread house ornaments are! I glued ribbon onto the back to create the ornaments. You could also cut holes in the chipboard and feed your wire or twine through it. These Christmas ornaments are definitely going on my Christmas tree. DIY Gingerbread ornaments are a great way to customize and add character to your tree.

These can be made as a special gift, wonderful hostess gift or use as a place setting decor item too! While we all love the smell of fresh baked gingerbread, sometimes making it is just not in the cards. Plus these simple fake gingerbread houses last longer than fresh baked.
