DIY Hanging Planter Boxes in 10 Minutes!
DIY hanging planter boxes that you can make right now, and for next to nothing!
Today I am bringing you one of an easy project of you ware looking to grow your DIY skills. These DIY hanging planter boxes are straight forward and can be used anywhere. Usually when I have a wood working project I want done, I patiently(impatiently) for my husband to get home, then I try to find an opening when I can distract him enough to want to help me. Yesterday I did not have enough patience so I decided would try it out for myself.
It wasn’t a large project…a “my size” kind of project you could say.
I found these lovely hanging herb boxes on Pinterest. I tried finding a source to go to to purchase them but came up cold( since making these, I have found some new sources for purchasing these). I decided, since I need them by this Saturday, so I was going to have to build them myself!
DIY Hanging Planter Boxes…
I started with some scrap pieces of plywood we had lying around. I first decided what size I wanted them. The ones in the picture seem to be assorted sizes, but I wanted mine all the same.
These are materials I used:
Table Saw 
1/2 – 1 inch plywood or solid wood
Screws
8 Large Screw Eye 
( I went for a longer set so that the proportions looked right)
Letter Stencils
Black Crafter’s Acrylic Paint
DEWALT 18-Volt Compact Drill/Driver Kit
Drill Bit Set
- I started cutting out the fronts and backs for the boxes. I cut them 12 inches long by 6 high. I was making 4 boxes so I needed to cut 8 this size
- I then cut the side pieces, which were 4 by 5 inches( I burned an inch since they will be sitting on top of the bottom piece. I cut 8 of these as well/
- Last I cut the bottom pieces which were 12 by 4 inches.
I used 1 inch plywood so that 1 inch needed to be taken into account when building.
I could have used nails for this, but there’s something about the industrial look that the screws give that I like. Plus, they are now the strongest herb boxes I’ve seen! What do you think of the plywood stamp on the front. I love this type of detail that I accidentally come upon.
Here is the first of the hanging planter boxes. You are free to assemble it in many different steps. I started by screwing the front and back pieces to the bottom piece. I then added the side pieces and screwed them in.
Two down, two more to go.
I then ran to our local True Value hardware store to see what kind of hooks I could come up with. They actually had the exact hooks from my inspiration picture, but I felt like I needed a little more, so I added two smaller ones to balance it out.
I predrilled some holes in the top, using a small block of wood as my measuring system for where the hooks would go. Then I screwed them in, making sure to check for the same heights and that the hooks were straight.
I then approached the painting part. I’ve used many different methods to paints words onto wood. For this project, I used three different ones!
Here they are hanging on my porch wall. I am in love. The hanging planter boxes were a huge success.
So, if I can do this, anyone else can. I dare you to try it out! Whatever it is! I bet you can do it.
