Amazing Brown Butter Apple Blondies
Sometimes you have a giant harvest of apples and if forces you to create some new recipes. Today I am sharing one of my favorite fall treats, with an amazing feature….brown butter. These brown butter apple blondies are soft, chewy, and has the perfect caramel/toffee flavor from the brown butter.
Brown butter just does something to a recipe. I have a couple brown butter recipes including my brown butter chocolate chip and toffee cookies.
By adding brown butter to a dessert recipe or even a savory recipe it gives it a depth of flavor that is unmatched. I use brown butter whenever I feel it will amplify a recipe and with blondies, I feel it always does.
This is a basic blondie recipe that I had in a family cookbook that I changed and adjusted to make it what it is now.
There are three parts to this recipe, the blondie recipe, the seasoned apples that go in the blondies and the brown butter glaze that goes on top.
These are a decadent dessert that are perfect for fall festivities as well as around the Christmas holidays. I am such a huge fan of these brown butter apple blondies. They have a flavor that you cant quite describe. They have a toffee/caramel like flavor without having any toffee or caramel in them!
The nuttiness of the brown butter gives this a flavor you will crave, and the texture is so tender and chewy, but soft and brownie like. The simple brown butter icing on the top is just another amazing addition to the apple blondies.
How to Make Brown Butter
- Place your butter in a saucepan and melt butter over medium heat.
- Bring the butter to a low boil and let it simmer until it begins to foam. Turn the heat down if it begins to foam too much.
- Continue to stir until the butter begins to turn brown. You may have a hard time seeing it because the butter will be foamy before it browns. But you will begin to see streams of brown in the foam
- Generally the foam will dissipate as the butter browns, leaving a nutty brown butter perfect to add to pastas and desserts.
You could eat these warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or let them cool completely and eat them as a simple treat. This brown butter apple blondie recipe is really easy to make.

Brown Butter Icing
- 1/4 cup brown brown butter
- 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions

The butter will begin to foam, turn the heat down and continue to stir until the butter begins to brown. The butter will have a nice nutty smell to it. Turn off the heat and let it cool while you assemble the rest of this desset.

Brown Butter Blondie
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9 by 13 pan by spraying with. nonstick spray. Now to assemble the blondie batter. In a medium to large bowl add 1 cup of brown butter and. your brown sugar. Whisk together. Leave the remaining butter for icing in the pan.
- Once the butter and sugar are combined, add the eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and whisk all of this together.
- Last, add your flour and baking powder and use a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to mix this together.
- Pour the apples into the bowl and gently fold them into the batter.
- Pour the batter into the 9 by 13 pan and spread it out evenly.
- Bake it in the oven for 35 minutes.
- Remove it from the oven and let it cool on a cooling rack for at least an hour. I like it to be room temperature before I add the icing.
- When you are ready to ice the blondies, mix together the remaining brown butter, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla using a whisk. If your butter solidified, melt is just a bit to make it easier to combine.
- Drizzle the icing over the blondies and let it all set up. I often place mine in the refrigerator to help it set up faster.
- Once they have completely cooled, cut into squares and serve!
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. I have stored mine at room temperature and have been fine, but to be safe, store them in the fridge. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months.
- If you freeze them, remove them from the container and let them come to room temperature on a plate. I would also recommend icing them after they defrost.
The taste of these brown butter apple blondies are unmatched. It has very moist crumbs that is tender and slightly chewy. Who needs apple pie when you can make this! I actually prefer it.
The spice from the cinnamon and the nuttiness from the brown butter compliment the tender slightly tart apples, creating something amazing.
Can you make this gluten-free?
You can replace regular flour with Bobs Red Mill 1 for 1 gluten free flour.
Since it is a 1 for 1 flour, you can use the same amount of flour as the original recipe. Keep in mind the texture may change a bit. I find this happens when I use gluten free flour.
