Incredibly Easy Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe
I have been making more and more cakes recently and this is one of my go to frosting recipes! I also love this pudding and cool whip frosting, you can check it out here! But today we are talking about simplicity in a most beautiful form! This incredibly easy chocolate buttercream frosting recipe is the perfect frosting to top your favorite chocolate cake, vanilla cake and so much more!
This chocolate buttercream frosting is super easy to make and has an amazing balanced flavor. I use salted butter as opposed to unsalted butter because I like how the salt balances the sweetness of the frosting. I have never been a huge fan of frosting, especially the really sweet kind. This frosting is perfect.
I also like to add a bit of brewed coffee or Crio Bru (which is a roasted cocoa bean drink). I love the Crio Bru, since I dont drink coffee.
The consistency of this frosting is soft and fluffy but also holds it shape. You can use it for decorating cakes or cupcakes or you can simply spread it over the top of your favorite cake and keep it simple. Simple is my go to.

Incredibly Easy Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients
- 8 tbsp room temperature butter I use salted butter
- 3 cups powdered sugar also called confectioners sugar
- 1 tsp coffee I use brewed Crio Bru which is roasted cocoa beans.
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2-3 tbsp milk or heavy cream
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer or using a large bowl with a hand mixer add your butter. Mix for a few minutes to whip up the butter using the whisk attachment. Do this on low speed to start and move to medium speed.
- Add the cocoa powder, vanilla extract coffee (optional)and continue mixing. Scrape down the bowl to incorporate any butter that may not be mixed in.
- Alternate adding your milk and powdered sugar until it becomes soft and fluffy Make sure to scrape the bowl as needed. You want the texture to be a soft but firmer frosting. You can add more milk if you want it to be a softer frosting.
- Whip up using your hand mixer or stand mixer for a couple minutes until is is fluffy and creamy.
- Serve on your favorite cakes or cupcakes. I like to use it on my sourdough chocolate cake! This is a sweet but also flavorful frosting. By using salted butter is balances the sweetness of the frosting. You can store this in an airtight container on the counter or in the fridge. Remember that it will harden in the fridge and will need to be reincorporated to soften it up.
This chocolate buttercream frosting recipe is super easy to make! It is the perfect frosting recipe to have in your back pocket when creating and baking. I love using it for so many different desserts. I especially love it on my sourdough chocolate cake! Did you know that I have that kind of recipe? its amazing too!
