A Home to Call Your Own
Everyday I wake up in my home…and I am grateful to be there. Everyday I walk down my stairs, and see my kids sitting at the counter eating their breakfast and I am grateful. Having a warm place to call my own is something I have never taken for granted, and my master bedroom retreat is my go to sanctuary I am so grateful I have.
Having a “home” is something many people may not ever know. Now, I know that I am incredibly lucky because yes I have a home to call my own, and yes its a nice home, that I work really hard to make beautiful everyday. Obviously, since I share posts about it almost everyday.
Today I am excited to partner with Habitat for Humanity, one of my most favorite non profits, for their campaign Home Is The Key, a national campaign addressing the nation’s rising affordable housing crisis to generate support.
I think many of us take advantage of the idea of having a home, and me, myself, I have never known the struggle of not having one. I do however understand the reality of working hard to live the dream of owning my own home. The sad reality is that nearly 19 million households ( one in 6) pay half or more of their income on housing. This leads to difficulty paying for the many other necessities in life such as insurance, schooling, clothing, and more.
Virtually nowhere in the U.S. can a full-time employee earning minimum wage afford a one-bedroom apartment. Even two such jobs won’t rent a two-bedroom apartment in 34 states and the District of Columbia. That is shocking and saddening.
I work hard with my husband to keep a roof over our heads and all the necessities in life. The sad reality is that so many others work equally hard, if not more and yet still fall short. This is why I love Habitat for Humanity.
While they do not give away homes, the owners put a ton of sweat equity into their homes and work to pay an affordable mortgage. The security of having a home to call your own is profound. I know that personally, and having a place to call your own is a true privilege.
I have that one place that I call my own. My master bedroom retreat is my escape, my retreat, my absolute favorite place to be. I feel safe, secure, and at peace in this space. When I am feeling stressed or anxious, retreating to my space is always great therapy.
One reason I love this space because of the amount of appreciation I have for it. I have personally invested blood, sweat, and tears into this room. We built those window seats, and we installed those wood beams.
That fireplace was built by my husband and I on a “date”. So many elements in my bedroom have memories attached to them and the sense of satisfaction of creating it myself.
Sadly so many people in the United States will never know the feeling of a secure place to call their own and that is why I felt passionate about joining in on their Home is the Key campaign.
