How to Fill a Raised Garden Bed For Cheap

Today I want to share one of my most favorite gardening tips to creating a beautiful garden by learning how to fill a raised garden bed with organic materials while saving soil and money!

What you need...

– sticks, twigs, or wood stumps – landscape fabric – gravel or rocks for drainage – grass clippings and/or straw – combination of sandy soil, vermiculite, organic compost, peat moss, potting soil or good garden soil – compost

1.

First, we stapled plastic sheeting and landscape fabric to the bottoms and sides to prevent weeds. Creating a strong base layer will benefit you for years.

Next, we laid down twigs, logs and tree branches to the base layer and then added some larger gravel to fill around the wood.

2.

We then added a layer of grass clipping straight from our backyard and made sure none of it was sprayed with weed killer.

3.

Next, we added a layer of straw. This will turn into great compost. You can add more or less depending on your preference.

4.

After, we added a layer of sandy soil. This helped fill any holes in the rock/straw/wood combination.

5.

Last, we added a thick layer of organic compost, vermiculite, organic mulch, animal manure, dry leaves, and organic garden bed soil.

6.

For years I have tried to plant golden beets in our difficult ground soil, and I have not had success yet… until this year. They have produced like crazy, giving us a huge bounty! This is definitely the easy way to grow a garden in my opinion.
