Painting and Distressing Furniture 101 - Bringing Farmhouse Style Home

Learning to distress your own furniture is a valuable skill. Painting and distressing furniture is a great way to transform dated pieces.  I recently transformed my bedroom furniture….this is my story.

The first coat is always the scariest.  The furniture will look BAD.  You will question why you decided to do this and feel pangs of regret. Ignore them…and keep on going, it will get better, I promise.

First Coat Tips

How many coats you need to do will vary a little. We applied two coats, and a third in certain areas where it seemed to need it. This is how it looked after it dried.

How Many Coats?

If this piece of furniture was 100 years old, and distressed with age, what areas of it are going to show the most wear. The edges and the raised areas. I start with a little bit at a time.

Begin Sanding

Wax all the pieces that you've painted and distressed, and then buff it with a clean rag until you see it begin to shine.
