Our Favorite Homemade Sourdough Tortillas

Of course I am going to keep sharing sourdough recipes and everyday it seems I fail to mention some of our very basic sourdough recipes. These sourdough tortillas are easy to make and are so flavorful. Once you start making sourdough, it becomes addicting. Your goal becomes seeing what you can make sourdough with and start to include it in everything you can think of.

These sourdough tortillas are one of the many sourdough recipes that I use daily. These are easy to prepare and are the perfect thing to use extra sourdough starter on.

I am often surprised at how easy it is to actually make homemade tortillas. It is very satisfying making these things homemade.

its even more satisfying when it doesn’t take as much time and work to make them. It feels like your cheating at life.

There are so many reasons why we make our own homemade sourdough tortillas, but here are a few of the main reasons.

Why you should make your own sourdough tortillas:


  • KID FRIENDLY – Kids are always big fans of tortillas for quesadillas, tacos and so much more, why not make sure that they east something good for them.
  • HEALTHY – These are by far better for you than store bought tortillas. They have clean and wholesome ingredients. Add in the benefits of sourdough and you have a great super food.
  • INEXPENSIVE – These cost mere pennies to make in comparison to store bought tortillas.
  • FLAVORFUL – By adding sourdough to these tortillas you are giving them more flavor and if you love sourdough you will love these.

  • Flour
  • Avocado or Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Sourdough Starter

I like to cook my tortillas with my cast iron skillet, as I use that for just about everything these days.

Simple Sourdough Tortillas

Easy to make sourdough tortillas with simple ingredients including oil, salt, flour and sourdough starter.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup sourdough start
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups flour

Instructions
 

  • In a stand mixer, add your ingredients and mix until well combined. Continue to mix until the dough is elastic.
  • At this point you can make your tortillas right away or place the dough in a bowl, cover it and let it sit for 12-24 hours at room temperature. If you are gluten intolerant,
  • When you are ready to make the sourdough tortillas, separate the sough into 12 equal parts.
  • Roll them into balls and cover with a towel. One by one, roll them flat with a rolling pin into flat circles. If you need a little bit of flour to help roll them out, it is best to do that.
  • Place your rolled out tortilla on a hot skillet. I like to use my cast iron skillet. Let is heat until bubbles begin to form. Flip it over and heat on the other side. Once it has browned, place it on a plate to cool or use right away to enjoy your fresh sourdough tortillas.
  • Store any extra in an airtight container.
