The Perfect Herb Butter Recipe with a Balance of Sweet and Spice
This recipe was kind of an accident. My son is quite the chef in the kitchen and he created this butter one night when he was wanting something a bit more flavorful for our sourdough focaccia bread. This herb butter is the perfect combination of sweet from pure maple syrup and spice with red pepper flakes and fresh garlic. It is balanced with parmesan cheese and chunky sea salt.
This compound butter is a great all around butter that is perfect for breads, rolls, and even great on veggies. It has well balanced flavors, and I think it is the perfect herb butter. We love it on my sourdough focaccia bread. You can get the recipe below!

SOURDOUGH FOCACCIA BREAD
If you are new to sourdough this is the first bread recipe you should make! It is easy to make and is practically fool proof!
Just a few ingredients
Herb Butter with Maple Syrup, Red Pepper Flakes and Sea Salt
Ingredients
- 1 cup softened unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/4-1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
- 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, sage, parsley) finely chopped
- 1/2 tablespoon fresh garlic
Instructions
- In a medium sized bowl add all your ingredients. Use a fork or spoon to combined the butter with the ingredients. You can mix these in a mixer but I find it is just as easy to mix it by hand, especially if the butter is room temperature.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge. Before using it, let it sit out and come soften.
Other ways to use this butter
You can use this butter for many other things including on steaks, potatoes, corn on the cob, steamed vegetables, roast chicken and more.
My favorite way to use this herb butter recipe is to add it to a slice of fresh sourdough bread, or my more popular herbed sourdough focaccia bread. I make this once a week and my kids devour it every time. Toast it up with a spread of this herbed butter and you have an amazing snack, side for some soup, or even just a great piece of toast for breakfast.
